Versioning
UGP versions use MAJOR.MINOR. How versions are numbered, pinned, cited and retired, and what the working draft is.
MAJOR and MINOR
| Change | Examples | Adopters |
|---|---|---|
| MAJOR | Changes the meaning of a grade, an axis or the core-code shape | Re-map to the new version |
| MINOR | A new profile pack, a new lexicon code, a calibrated tolerance, clearer wording; errata | No re-mapping needed |
The core code carries the major version (U1-…), so a code always says which major version it was written under. §12.1
Profile packs carry their own version and the core version they depend on. §18.3
Pinned versions
Every offer and every document of sale records the UGP version the unit was graded under, and a dispute is judged against that version. A record is never reinterpreted under a later version, though it can be regraded from its stored raw data and re-issued. §14.6
On this site, the version is part of the address:
| Address | What it is |
|---|---|
/v1.0/… | The v1.0 text. Until v1.0 is final this is the public comment draft; the final text then replaces it at the same address, and the draft stays available as a permanent snapshot. Errata after that are published as MINOR versions. |
/latest/… | Redirects to the current version. Good for "read the standard" links; not for citations. |
/draft/… | The working draft, where accepted changes collect before the next release. Not citable; not indexed by search engines. |
Cite a pinned address, such as devicegrading.com/v1.0/spec/core-code#grammar. Section anchors stay the same in every language.
Deprecation
A MAJOR version stays valid for citation and dispute for at least 12 months after its successor is published. §18.4
The public comment draft
v1.0 is published first as a public comment draft. Records graded to it cite it as UGP v1.0 (public comment draft). After the comment period, v1.0 final is published with the changes marked; grades issued under the draft stay valid and can be regraded from their stored raw data under the final text. §19.5
Earlier drafts
v0.1 and v0.3 were internal drafts. They were never published and are not citable. Annex G
