How marketplaces, refurbishers and software vendors adopt UGP: grade to it, show it, claim it. Free, with no permission needed.

UGP is free to adopt. Grading devices to it, showing its grade names, codes and tests, and building the core code, schema and grading logic into any product, commercial ones included, need no licence and no permission. §17.2

Who adopts UGP

  • Marketplaces and wholesalers show UGP grades on listings and price sheets, and use the misgrade rules for disputes. §14
  • Refurbishers, repairers and graders inspect to the protocol and produce UGP records. §5.4
  • Software vendors implement the record schema, the core code and the derivation in inventory, diagnostic and listing tools. Annex B

Four steps

  1. Grade to UGP. Record every applicable axis with its basis, store the raw observations, and derive the status, grade and core code; never type them in. §4
  2. Show it correctly. Use the published names with their tests, disclose carrier locks, non-genuine parts and partial kits, and never show a status as a grade. See Display rules.
  3. Claim it. State the version, conformance level and verification tier: Graded to UGP v1.0 · UGP-Full · V0 Declared. See Claim format.
  4. Pin the version. Record the UGP version on every offer and document of sale. §14.6

The adoption checklist puts these into one list.

Your own policy stays yours

UGP describes condition. It does not set prices, commercial terms or listing rules. An adopter decides, for example, whether to accept carrier-locked devices, which statuses it buys for repair, what remedy it gives for a misgrade, and which verification tier it requires from each supplier. §1.3 · §14.3 · §14.7

What needs the steward's agreement

Using a UGP grade name for a different definition, publishing a modified version or translation under the UGP name, implying that the steward inspected or endorses a device, using "UGP" in a company, product or domain name, and using "UGP Verified" all need the steward's written agreement. See the name and badge policy. §17.5
