Governance and versioning
The steward, MAJOR.MINOR versions, profile packs, deprecation and the change process.
18.1 Steward
Device Supply maintains the standard, publishes it at its permanent home with every past version, and considers change proposals from anyone. Contributors are credited in Annex G.
18.2 Versions
Versions use MAJOR.MINOR:
- MAJOR: changes the meaning of a grade, an axis or the core-code shape. Adopters must re-map.
- MINOR: additive or clarifying changes, such as a new profile pack, a new lexicon code, a calibrated tolerance or wording.
- Errata are published as MINOR.
18.3 Profile packs
Profile packs carry their own version and the core version they depend on.
18.4 Deprecation
A MAJOR version remains valid for citation and dispute for at least 12 months after its successor is published.
18.5 Change process
Anyone may propose a change through the public proposal form at the standard's home. The steward reviews proposals each quarter, publishes every decision with its reasons, and announces each release at least 30 days before it takes effect. Once outside adopters exist, the steward intends to invite an advisory group of repairers and wholesalers.
